Chemistry and Physics of New Functional Materials

Our history

Chemical education at the Ural University began since its foundation in 1920. In the following years, simultaneously with the reorganization of the university, the forms of existing structural units also changed. The Department of Chemistry was re-established at the revived classical University in 1932 (the first graduation of chemists took place in 1937), and in 1934 the Faculty of Chemistry was opened. The greatest changes in the teaching staff of the Faculty of Chemistry occurred in the first two decades of its existence – people were transferred from place to place, suspended from work, some were arrested and sent into exile.

Nevertheless, the university grew and strengthened, and with it the Faculty of Chemistry grew and strengthened. Before the Great Patriotic War, 164 students studied there. Since then, more than 5,000 chemists have been trained, who work throughout Russia and abroad. In the 1990s, the USU Faculty of Chemistry was one of the first faculties to begin training in a multi-level system. The first graduation of bachelors of Chemistry took place in 1997 (admission 1993), and on September 1, 1997, the preparation of masters of chemistry began.

Since 2011, the USU Faculty of Chemistry has been transformed into the Department of "Chemical Faculty" of the UrFU Institute of Natural Sciences. In 2016, the Institute of Natural Sciences was transformed into the UrFU Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Institute was divided into a Bachelor's Degree School (consists of departments) and a School of Sciences (includes departments). The Department of Fundamental and Applied Chemistry; the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry; the Department of Organic Chemistry and High Molecular Weight Compounds; the Department of Physical and Inorganic Chemistry provide training in chemical fields at IENiM. Almost half of the staff of the Institute of Solid State Chemistry and the Institute of High–Temperature Electrochemistry of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and more than a third of the staff of the Institute of Organic Synthesis are graduates of the USU Chemical Faculty. Many of them are already doctors and candidates of sciences.  In the Sverdlovsk region, graduates of the USU chemical faculty work at almost every enterprise that has a chemical plant in its composition, or is otherwise related to chemistry. Many graduates have devoted themselves to teaching in the country's universities, secondary specialized institutions, and schools.
